The band was at the forefront of the ska revival movement when it formed in Birmingham in the late ‘70s. In England, they were known as just The Beat—they later added the “English” to differentiate themselves from Phil Collins’s band of the same name. On both sides of the pond, they were known as a band that produced party hits that were perfect to skank to.
