Al Green was born on April 13, 1946 in Forrest City, Arkansas. He was the son of a sharecropper, and got his start in music at the age of nine when he sang in a local quartet. Green progressed through different bands until he was discovered by a record executive and signed to a contract. His solo start was successful, but tragedy struck early in his career. An ex-girlfriend killed herself in Green’s home. Green emerged from that experience a more spiritual person, a quality that can be seen in his music today.
